Full Kathleen Chalfant Biography
Kathleen was born Kathleen Ann Bishop. Her Father was William Bishop and her mother was Norah Bishop, who owned a boarding house and was an officer for the Coast Guard. She is the wife of Henry Chalfant, a photographer and documentary filmmaker, whom she married in 1966. They have a son, David Chalfant, who was the bass player for the folk-rock band The Nields. In addition, they have a daughter named Andromache Chalfant who is a set designer and lives in Brooklyn.
Chalfant studied acting with Wynn Handman, who was a protege of Sanford Meisner.
At the time she was playing terminally ill cancer patient Vivian Bearing in "Wit", her brother was battling cancer. She shaved her head for the role. She has won numerous acting awards, including the Outer Critics, Drama Desk, Obie and Lucille Lortel awards for her performance in "Wit." She won a second Obie award for "Talking Heads." Chalfant was nominated for Broadway's 1993 Tony Award as Best Actress (Featured Role - Play) for her role in Tony Kushner's "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches". |
