Biography by DoreenL
Fara Palmer is a woman of Cree/Saulteaux/European descent.
As a child it was her dream to sing, and sing she did. An early musical highlight was when, at the age of 12, she sang at an outdoor concert with headliner Buffy Ste. Marie.
A singer/songwriter, vocal & studio coach, and workshop presentor, Fara Palmer is a lover of all musical genres and boldly strives to create songs that incorporate her eclectic taste in music. The result is a tapestry of sound that is Pop-based, but is inter-woven with elements of rock/r&b/funk/disco/world/dance/and sometimes country. Her first two albums entitled "This Is My World" and "Prettybrown" were nominated for Canadian Juno Awards, as well as for Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and went on to win in categories of "Best Song Of The Year" and "Female Artist Of The Year" at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. One of her songs on the Prettybrown album, "I'll make it up to you", placed in the top ten for the worldwide John Lennon Songwriting contest in the category of R&B.
Fara has been blessed to share her music with audiences across Canada and the United States and has performed with artists and friends such as: Susan Aglukark, Willie Dunn, Buffy Ste. Marie, Leela Gilday, Sandy Scofield, Shania Twain, Sarah McLoughlin, Jann Arden, Ray Charles, Chantal Krevuisit and many other talented musicians and performers.
In 2000/01 she co-hosted the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards with Derek Miller, promoted and toured her second album "Prettybrown", and learned she was pregnant with her first child. Upon learning she was about to become a mother, Fara took some time off of her career to raise a family.
In the summer of 2007, Fara Palmer resurfaced with a new album entitled "Phoenix". The new cd is difficult to describe as it is a fusion of many different genres. But "Pop/R&B/folkrock" comes pretty close. With the new cd, Fara chose to do something a little different. Rather than deciding on a specific "sound" for the album, she chose to let the music for each song be determined by the song itself. And the result is........a very eclectic, experience based album! Edgy, fun, and colourful: Fara has reached deep into her soul to bring you a collection of songs which are meant to take you, the listener, on a journey. She hopes you bust a gut laughing, cry, rage, rock out, feel the fires of inspiration, and most of all enjoy!! Delving fearlessly into social/personal issues that are a part of today's reality, Fara uses her voice and her lyrics as a catalyst for positive change and self-awareness. In this her third release, Fara's love of music and her love for the people shines through in each and every one of her songs.
She dedicates this new album to her brother Gabriel, who was murdered in 2002 and chose to call the album Phoenix because of the symbolic nature of the Phoenix bird. When a Phoenix dies, it is engulfed in flames and is reborn through its ashes. Fara relates the grieving, recovering, and healing process that she and her family went through to the life cycle of the Phoenix. In a way, her family has risen from the ashes of the loss of their beloved Gabriel, and been reborn. |
