Full Penelope Ann Miller Biography
Miller was born Penelope Andrea Miller in Los Angeles, California, the middle daughter of TV actor and producer Mark Miller and costume designer and publicist Beatrice Ammidown; Miller's mother was the Goddaughter of Aristotle Onassis, and also edited Harper's Bazaar. Miller has two sisters, Marisa and Savannah. Miller moved to New York City to study theater after graduating from high school.
Miller's film debut came in 1987 in Adventures in Babysitting, while in 1988 her role as Emily in Our Town garnered her a Tony award nomination. The same time she also appeared in an episode of the hip 80's series Miami Vice (Series 4 - Death and The Lady). In 1990 she played Paula in the Oscar-nominated Awakenings, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. She has appeared in a number of TV and theatrical movies subsequently, notably as Edna Purviance in Chaplin in 1992 and as Gail in Carlito's Way in 1993. She appeared alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop. Just prior to this she had a role in the Gary Sinise directed film Miles from Home. She took the lead role in the big-budget creature feature The Relic (1997) as Dr. Margo Green.
In 2002, she was in the film Dead in a Heartbeat and starred in a two-part episode of the A&E TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (Motherhunt). Her 2005 movie Funny Money was the top movie at the Sarasota Film Festival. She appeared in the Fox series Vanished for six episodes, playing the ex-wife of a U.S. Senator whose wife has mysteriously disappeared, and will appear in the upcoming film Blonde Ambition. She also played Fran on Desperate Housewives.
In 1994, she married actor Will Arnett; they divorced in 1995. In 2000, she married James Huggins and had her first child, Eloisa May. That same year, she played teacher/rapist Mary Kay Letourneau in the TV movie, All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story. Penelope dedicates her time not only for her career but for sports too. She enjoys martial arts and trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since the early 2000's. Before that, she was dedicated to Judo, which she trained since her teen's, and made it to the US Open's final matches. She fought with acclaimed judokas such as Gella Vandecaveye and Marisabella Lomba. Ann Miller lost her match against Vandecaveye (by a slight points' difference), but defeated acclaimed Lomba in a dramatic fight (Penelope fought with a broken toe and a bleeding nose), going to Lomba's back and holding her, using a choke hold to force Lomba to give up. Lomba struggled mighty to get rid of Ann Miller's imobilization, but ultimately failed, and submitted. Penelope Ann Miller was, for some time, among the top 50 list of the best in the US' ranking of women on Judo, through the early, mid 80's. |
