This Colombian export was born on July 10, 1972, in Barranquilla, Colombia. "La Toti", as her family referred to her, was extremely close to her family, which consisted of five brothers and sisters and many cousins.
A quiet child, Sofia studied a lot and took school very seriously. When her nose wasn't in the books, she surrounded herself with music, whether it was watching her family singing, dancing and playing instruments, or listening to her favorite group Menudo (Ricky Martin's claim to fame before he was Livin' la Vida Loca).
A playful child who loved Barbies, Sofia also spent a lot of time on her father's farm, where she swam in the river and rode horses.
Sofia was a student at a private bilingual elementary school where she not only got to learn and perfect her English skills, she developed tight, lifelong friendships. As for boyfriends, she only has 5 ex-boyfriends, the most significant being the father of her son, Manolo.
Married to her boyfriend of 4 years at the age of 18, her ex-husband gave her the greatest gift of all; her son, who is now 8 years old. After Manolo was born, Sofia was set on becoming a dentist, but she was faced with a change in career paths.
Discovered by a photographer while walking down a Colombian beach (Laetitia Casta was also discovered on the sands of a beach), Sofia began to receive modeling offers. Since modeling was more attractive and glamorous than becoming a dentist, Sofia decided to try her hand at modeling, three years after she began studying dentistry.
Swiping her dentist uniform for designer togs, Sofia's modeling career began. After an appearance in a Pepsi commercial that was broadcast all over her native Colombia, Sofia moved to Bogotá at the age of 20, where she worked on the runway and on television.
One of her biggest claims to fame was her co-hosting duties with Fernando Fiore on Fuera de Serie, a series which sent her to exotic places all over the world. Broadcast on Univision, with Sofia as co-host from 1995 to 1999, it gave Sofia American exposure and made her a star in the Latin American market.
The same year that she started the travel show, Sofia appeared on Acapulco, cuerpo y alma and has recently starred in the series A que no te atreves.
Aside from her television work, Sofia's most recent project is her calendar, Sofia 2000, which she describes as the most daring thing she has done. She has also designed a bra for fellow full-figured women, and will appear on commercials for Bally gyms. This summer, Sofia appeared on the cover of Channels magazine and was featured in Gear.
With a huge following on the Internet, Sofia has become one of the most viewed women in cyberspace. With her own website, sofiavergara.com, boasting an average of over 12 million hits a month (only six months after launching the site), Sofia has become the "undisputed Latin virtual queen". |

She was born in Barranquilla, Atlantico. Her mother is a homemaker and her father worked in business. "La Toti" was the nickname given to Vergara by her five brothers and sisters and many cousins, including television news anchor and reporter Carlos Vergara, who currently works for WTVJ in Miami, Florida. She grew up between her hometown of Barranquilla and was raised in a well-off family, attending a private bilingual (Spanish/English) school. She got married at the age of 18, and she gave birth to her son Manolo in 1991 at the age of 19. The marriage did not last very long, and then she studied dentistry at a college in Colombia for three years. Vergara now lives in Miami and Los Angeles, and brought her mother, sister, and her son to live with her. Her older brother was murdered in Colombia, a crime that is still unsolved.
Vergara was discovered by a photographer while walking a Colombian beach. Soon, she was presented with attractive offers in modeling and TV work, and followed that course. Having been raised rather conservatively and devoutly religious, this was a bit overwhelming at first. In an article in Maxim Magazine in January of 2001, Vergara was described as "apprehensive about doing her first TV commercial—until her Catholic schoolteachers gave her permission to take the job" . She made her first public appearance at the age of 17 in a Pepsi commercial that was widely telecast all over Latin America. In order to support her son, mother, and younger siblings who needed her financial support in the absence of her father, who had departed the family, she dropped out of college in order to earn good wages.
Vergara moved to Bogotá at the age of 20, where she worked as a model on the runway and on TV. From 1995 to 1999, she was co-host with Fernando Fiore on Fuera de Serie ("Out of the Ordinary" or "Over-the-Top"), a series which sent her to exotic places all over the world (this is similar to the U.S. Wild On! travel series). It was telecast on the international Univision Spanish-language network, and it made her a star in the Latin American market and gave her some USA TV exposure. She also co-hosted the Univision show A que no te atreves ("I Dare You"). She recently appeared as a guest star on the HBO series Entourage.
Besides runway and catalog modeling work, Vergara also did independent projects. She was photographed for posters swimsuit calendars in 1998, 2000, and 2002. These were top sellers in Latin America, and also penetrated the North American market. She did South American television ads, and also posed in swimsuits for posters for beer advertising, especially for Miller Lite beer.
Vergara is 170 cm (5 feet, 7 inches) tall, and she has naturally blonde/sunbleached hair (for films and TV, she is frequently required to dye it brunette to make her look more "Latina"). Vergara was long under an exclusive TV contract with Univision, and after it expired, she accepted a role with ABC in the United States. With ABC, she appeared on the sitcoms Hot Properties and The Knights of Prosperity. Vergara will play the role of Mary Alice Young in the Colombian version of Desperate Housewives. |
