In February 2006, Ellen celebrated her thirty-year class reunion by flying her graduating class to California to be guests on her show. She presented Atlanta High School with a surprise gift of a new electronic LED marquee sign.
The agency's owner, Marina Batkis, who had obtained the family's address from their application to adopt the dog, proceeded to the family's house to pick up the dog. The family filmed Marina picking up the dog and called police for assistance. The police allowed the dog to be returned to the animal adoption agency because the microchip in the dog was still registered to the agency. Shortly thereafter, Ellen's agents left this voicemail for Batkis: "We're filing a legal case against you. We're going to be contacting the media. This is not going to be good for your store or your organization."
Degeneres' live, on-air tear-filled plea publicly acknowledged that she had violated the agreement, but begged the agency to return the dog to the home. The animal has since been placed with a new family by the agency. On the October 18, 2007 show, Degeneres reported that the owners of the private pet adoption agency had been receiving death threats and asked that people not use violence as a means to an end.
