Full Siobhan Donaghy Biography
Siobhán Donaghy (born 14 June 1984 in London), is an English singer songwriter. Until September 2001, she was a member of English pop group the Sugababes, after which she was replaced by Heidi Range. Since her departure from the Sugababes, Donaghy has released five solo singles and two albums. She lives in Eastcote, Middlesex, with her family, which includes her sisters Bevin and Roisin.
Siobhán Donaghy was born in London, England on the 14th of June 1984. She is of Irish descent and has been performing since she was 12 years old. She was discovered by former All Saints manager Ron Tom, who went on to manage Sugababes.
The group was created when Keisha Buchanan and Mutya Buena, friends since they were only eight years of age, met Donaghy at a 1998 party when they were thirteen, and were introduced by manager, Ron Tom. Buena and Donaghy had been working separately with Tom, and while they were recording it was suggested that they would try it with a third member. Buchanan had been invited to come along to watch by Buena and was asked if she could sing; the name 'Sugababes' was made up by their manager Ron Tom. At fourteen, they were offered a record contract by London Records and started calling themselves the Sugababes.
Their debut album produced three more top 40 hits in the UK - "New Year", "Run for Cover" and "Soul Sound".
The Sugababes had been following a heavy touring schedule for over a year with Donaghy gradually becoming more and more unhappy with her position in the band. Feeling that the other girls were trying to force her out, Donaghy decided to leave of her own accord and did so during a Japanese promotional tour. Her management initially stated that she left because she wanted to pursue a fashion career.
In an interview with The London Paper Donaghy said: "It's difficult to leave a band and then make sort of a solo career. I left for a very good reason and I’ve never for a second wanted to go back there." Donaghy is still in touch with her former band-mate Mutya Buena: “We’re not exactly friends but we make an effort with each other and chat every once in a while. I’m always pleased to see her.” But she is no longer speaking with Keisha Buchanan: “That’s why I left. Me and Keisha were never friends, and I never knew what her problem was. I took it into my own hands to make myself happy. But I believe in moving forward not backwards and I really don’t want to slag her off.”
"I think we were just very young. I mean we met when I was thirteen. I just think yeah, we probably didn't get on the best. But I think, lots of people met people at school around that time and probably fall out. Don't stay the best of friends forever, but it's not that much of a big deal now", Donaghy said on Channel 5 News.
At the age of 19, Donaghy said: "I was 12 when I met the manager, 13 when I met the girls, 16 on the first release, 17 when I left. At which point I was happy never to work in music again. I had got to the point where I'd look in the mirror and not know who I was. I felt like I didn't have a personality. I'd lost my identity... I felt like a zombie. A dead person."
Overloaded: The Singles Collection is a greatest hits compilation album from the Sugababes that released on 13 November 2006. Contrary to initial reports that vocals from departed Sugababes Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy were going to be re-recorded by Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah, all the original vocals were kept for the compilation.
The album "Ghosts" was released on June 25, 2007 to excellent reviews in the United Kingdom, but with no radio support it peaked at #92 and then fell out of the Top 200 Albums. Donaghy said: "I would like some commercial success. But only because then you're allowed to make another record." She promoted this album in a number of magazines, telling The London Paper: “I make leftfield pop music, and it’s a difficult genre to be in because it’s not straight pop, it’s not alternative, and it’s quite hard to market. You have to push it and work it.”.
"Medevac" is to be released as a single in early 2008, soon after the name of the winning budding director is announced.
Donaghy has appeared as a backing vocalist on the Mattafix album Signs Of A Struggle and on the Morcheeba album The Antidote.
She will play the character of Mimi, a lead role, in the new William Baker directed production of RENT in the West End which opens on 2 October 2007 at the Duke of York Theatre. She is said to be overwhelmed that she got the part and looking forward to the challenge. In August 2007 she flew to New York to watch RENT on Broadway to get inspiration for her interpretation of her part. Donaghy will be making her West End debut.
Donaghy is also working as a DJ. In the July 2007 issue of Word magazine she gave her DJing tips: "It's alright to drink when you're DJ'ing - I managed to put away half a bottle of vodka last time I was doing it. Also, only try to mix house tunes and don't bother mixing anything else. And you must dance to the records you're playing." |
