Beverly Johnson rose to fame as the first African-American cover model of the American Vogue in August 1974. The cover was shot by Francesco Scavullo. Johnson's appearance on American newsstands was a landmark that helped expand the notion of beauty and it helped dispel the myth that white women would not buy a fashion magazine with a black model on the cover. She was not, however, the first African American model to appear on the cover of a Western fashion magazine. That distinction was given to the African American model Donyale Luna, who appeared on the March 1966 cover of British Vogue.
In 2006, the New York Post Page Six reported that she was being stalked by a former boyfriend in Los Angeles.
The July 4, 2006 edition on Page Six of the New York Post reported that Johnson was the leading contender to replace Star Jones-Reynolds on The View. However, Jones-Reynolds was replaced by Rosie O'Donnell.
