Full Julie Benz Biography
Born in Pennsylvania, Julie Benz's father is a Pittsburgh surgeon, her mother an ice skater. The family settled in nearby Murrsyville, PA when Julie was two, and she stared ice stakting at age three. She competed in the 1988 U.S. Championships in junior ice dancing with her partner David Schilling, coming in 13th. Her older brother and sister, Jeffrey and Jennifer, were the 1987 U.S. Junior Champions in ice dancing and competed internationally. When Julie was 14, she had a bad stress fracture and had to take time off. Her ice skating career over, Julie turned to acting and got involved in the local theater where she got a role as an extra in the movie Street Law. Her first speaking movie part was a small role in the Black Cat episode in the Dario Argento/George Romero co-direction horror flick, Due occhi diabolici (1990) playing alongside 'Harvey Kietel' . A year later she got a role on a TV show called "Hi Honey, I'm Home" (1991). After graduating from high school, Julie entered New York University to study acting there. After graduation, Julie moved to Los Angeles to further pursue her career and landed some small roles in movies and TV including a guest appearance on "Married... with Children" (1987) and in the Aaron Spelling TV pilot "Cross Town Traffic".
In early 1997, Julie auditioned for the role of Buffy in the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), but lost out to Sarah Michelle Gellar. However, she was offered a small role as a vampire girl in which she did such a good job that her part was expanded to a few more episodes in playing the vamp Darla. With that, Julie Benz's career had finally taken off. She also had a small, but memorable, role playing a receptionist in the movie As Good As It Gets (1997). |

Additional Julie Benz Biography
Julie Benz (born May 1, 1972 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American actress. Benz grew up in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Franklin Regional High School. She later graduated from New York University. Initially, Benz followed her mother and older siblings, Jeffrey and Jennifer, into the figure skating field, and competed in the 1988 US Junior Ice Skating Championship. Benz gave up her pursuit of ice skating after an accident.
Benz achieved her first acting role in a local play in 1989. She is perhaps best known for portraying the vampire Darla in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she was the first character seen on screen and spoke the first line, and later in the spin-off series, Angel. She has acted in such films as Jawbreaker and As Good as It Gets.
Benz also provided the voice of Miranda Keyes in the video game Halo 2, though she did not return to the role in the upcoming sequel Halo 3 as Bungie wanted to try a new direction with the Miranda Keyes voice by giving the character an accent, replaced by Justis Bolding.
For her role as Rita Bennett on Dexter, Benz won the 2006 Satellite Award for Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. |
