Full Alex Kingston Biography
Growing up on the outskirts of London, Kingston was first introduced to the theater when she and her family visited her mother's native Germany, where she saw her uncle, an actor, perform. She made her own stage debut at age five, playing the Angel Gabriel in a Nativity play. "My mother made me these big, beautiful wings," says Kingston, "and the other kids—without wings—were all jealous. I was very excited, and then more than a bit upset when I discovered that Gabriel was really a guy."
Kingston was inspired to pursue an acting career by her English teacher at the all-girls grammar school she attended in Epsom, where she often had leading roles in school plays. She landed her first professional role at age 15 as a judo-trained bully on the successful British TV series "Grange Hill."
After finishing school, she moved to London, where she was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After completing the two-year study program, Kingston worked in repertory theater across England. She joined the famed Royal Shakespeare Company, where she appeared in productions of "Much Ado About Nothing," "King Lear," "Love's Labours Lost," "The Curse of the Starving Class" and "The Bright and Bold Design." |

Kingston grew up in Epsom, on the outskirts of London, the eldest of three daughters of a butcher and his German wife. Her mother's younger brother is actor Walter Renneisen. She was inspired to pursue acting by one of her teachers at the all-girls grammar school she attended as a child. She later completed a two-year program at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and went on to join the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company.
Kingston has appeared in a number of British produced television dramas, including Crocodile Shoes, Moll Flanders and The Knock. She has also guest starred on The Bill. In 1997, Kingston gained public television fame after being cast on the medical drama ER at the start of the fourth season. In 2006, Kingston claimed she was turned down for a role on ABC's Desperate Housewives for being too curvy. In the same article, she admits to considering and nearly attempting suicide after her split with ex-husband Ralph Fiennes.
Kingston met actor Ralph Fiennes while both were students at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. They were together for ten years before marrying in 1993. They divorced in 1997, after Fiennes left her for actress Francesca Annis, 18 years his senior. Kingston married her second husband, German writer and freelance journalist Florian Haertel, in 1998. They met the previous year on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. They have one child together, Salome Violetta, born March 28, 2001. |

Alex Kingston Quote(s)
| I thought it was an appalling place. Then I went through a period of being amused by it. Now it's sort of both. Californians don't have that marvelous British cynicism, but then the British can be so patronizing at times. |
