| An attractive soapopera veteran, Hicks seemed a sure bet for stardom after being Emmy-nominated playing the blond bombshell in the madefor-TVMarilyn: The Untold Story (1980). The following year she starred in her first feature, Death Valley (1981), which began a maddeningly unrewarding screen career. Hicks has given solid performances in such films as Garbo Talks, The Razor's Edge (both 1984), Fever Pitch (1985), Peggy Sue Got Married, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (both 1986), Like Father, Like Son (1987), and She's Out of Control (1989), but the meaty leading roles and flashy supporting parts always go to other actresses. The surprise success of Child's Play (1988), in which she played a single mom who inadvertently buys her son a demonically possessed doll, failed to give her career the real jolt it needs. |

Hicks was born in New York City to Jackie and Walter Hicks, an electronics salesman. She has Irish and English ancestry. Her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona during her childhood. After attending Saint Mary's College (Indiana), across the street from the University of Notre Dame, where she studied theology, Hicks won an acting fellowship to Cornell University. Hicks, whose parents were practicing Christians, is a devout Roman Catholic. She is married to special effects expert Kevin Yagher and they currently live in Bel-Air. The two have a daughter named Catie, who was born in 1992.
After appearing on Broadway in the stage version of Tribute, she first rose to prominence as Dr. Faith Coleridge on the soap opera Ryan's Hope 1976 - 1978. In 1979, she co-starred in the television version of The Bad News Bears. But it was her Emmy-nominated portrayl of Marilyn Monroe in the 1980 TV movie Marilyn: The Untold Story that first established her. In 1982, she took the lead role in the comedy/detective series Tucker's Witch opposite Tim Matheson. Supporting roles in movies followed, with appearances in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as Dr. Gillian Taylor, Peggy Sue Got Married (both in 1986), and the mother in Child's Play (in 1988). The next year, she starred opposite Tony Danza in She's Out of Control. |
