Full Jay Brown Biography
Jay is the grandson of Bert Atkinson and Evie Brown. His mother, Karen, died in 2004 of breast cancer. He was first mentioned on 5 December 2006, when a dying Evie told Bert that he had a grandson.
Bert attended Evie's funeral in December 2006 and saw a boy he presumed to be Jay. He did not talk to the boy, and as he was leaving with his friend, Pat Evans, a young chav on a bicycle asked Pat for a cigarette, and mocked Bert by calling him "granddad". Evie's friend Beryl then came and shouted at the boy for not attending his grandmother's funeral. Bert was stunned to learn that the boy was his grandson.
Jay reacted with fury when Bert informed him that he would be attending Walford High School after the half term holidays. Bert didn't want to look after Jay in the half term, so asked Peter Beale to look after him and show him around. Jay soon grew bored of doing nothing, so he persuaded Peter to break into Pauline Fowler's house with him. Peter didn't want to, so Jay accused him of being a wimp, and reluctantly Peter went in. Jay and Peter were later caught out by Yolande who saw a torch shining through the window and called the police.
On Jay's first day at Walford High School, Bert refused to give him dinner money, so he went without food for the day. Ian later accused him of stealing a bacon sandwich from a customer's plate at his café. Bert defended Jay, and was shocked to learn that school dinners were not free as he thought.
Bert later caught Jay with cigarettes and confiscated them. Lauren Branning then bought some from Mo Harris and invited Jay to her house to smoke them, only to be caught by her mother Tanya.
Jay later kidnapped Gus Smith's dog, Wellard, while he was in the care of Mickey Miller, demanding £50 and a games console as ransom. He tried to befriend a gang of boys who teased him when Yolande mothered him in the café. He tried to impress them by calling Yolande a "black cow" in the street, but was told off by Shirley Carter and ran away. Yolande later asked Bert to make Jay apologise, but he refused, instead mooning Bert outside the shop. A man walked up to Bert and Jay and introduced himself as Jay's father Jase.
Not long after his dad arrived, Jay discovered that Bert had left the Square, leaving Jay and Jase to bond. They are now living together above the chip shop. Jay however, is still getting in to trouble. He was caught vandalising the outside of The Vic with a can of spray paint. Roxy Mitchell chased him, bare foot through the streets, until she bumped into Jase. She was taken back to the flat where Jase could attend to her foot, which she had cut during her chase. Jay returned, unware that Roxy was there. She grabbed him and threatened to take him back to the Vic to clean up the mess. Jase told her he would deal with it. Jay thought they had got one over on her and as Roxy left, he looked pleased with himself. Until Jase decided to punish him by taking one of the wheels to Jay's bike round to the Vic and asked Roxy to keep it behind the bar until she thinks he has been punished enough. He also had to clean up the mess he made with the spray can.
More recently, Jay has been teased about his body odor by Lauren and her friend Lucy Beale. Jase bought him deodorant from a local chemist and later had words with Max, Lauren's father about her taunting of Jay. He also stole a pink thong belonging to Roxy Mitchell and then slipped it into Ben's pocket.
On the 5th November he wanted to go to a bonfire party but Jase wouldn't let him. Jase told Jay not to open the door to anyone. The door buzer then went he opened it only to find that his dad's old friend Terry Bates was there Terry told Jay a story about Jase and then took him out to a firework display. Jase arrived back to find that the flat was empty. He ran into the strets calling Jay's name. When he returned to the flat in dispair, Jay was in the kitchen.
