Full Tina Turner Biography
After 40 years in the music business, Tina Turner has become one of the most commercially-successful international female rock stars to date. Her sultry, powerful voice, her incredible legs, her time-tested beauty and her unforgettable story all contribute to her legedary status.

Born to a mixed race (Native and African American) sharcropping family in the segregated South, Anna Mae Bullock (Tina) and her sister were basically abandoned by their sparring parents early on. After her grandmother's death, she eventually moved to St. Louis to reunite with her mother. This opened up a whole new world of R & B nightclubs to the precocious 16-year-old.

Before long she had given up early aspirations of a nursing career and had joined Ike Turner's Kings of Rythym. Ike Turner wanted to turn his local fame into national stardom and quickly saw the potential of the talented, but unmolded, teen-aged Anna Mae. One thing led to another; they got married in Mexico between the birth of Tina's two sons - one son was Ike's and the other was the result of an earlier relationship of Tina's. Before too long the Ike and Tina Turner Review was tearing up large and small R&B and Soul venues throughout the early and mid 1960s. The hits were relatively few, but the unsurpassed energy and excitement generated by the live stage show (read: Tina) made the Revue a solid touring act, along with the likes of James Brown and Ray Charles.

The rest is rock and roll history. Since that time, Tina has toured the globe several times, released several more hit records (none as big as Private Dancer) and appeared in several movies (her admitted dream is to cross over to films). Tina, now nearing 60, has apparently semi-retired, but she can still thrill audiences seemingly through any venue she desires: concerts, TV appearances, charity benefits. Tina Turner is the undisputed Queen of Rock and Roll.
Additional Tina Turner Biography
Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939) is a singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. An eight-time Grammy Award winner, Turner's consistent success and popularity in rock music has earned her the title, "The Queen of Rock & Roll." Although best known as a rock artist, she has performed R&B, soul, dance and pop

The popular press has referred to Ms. Turner favorably: "the truest rock diva of all," "soul's first real diva", "the most dynamic female soul singer in the history of the music," and "one of soul music's most incendiary performers." Turner is known for her energetic stage presence, powerful vocals, spectacular rock concerts, as well as for her long, well-proportioned legs.

Although well-known and respected as a performer before she separated from Ike Turner, it was in 1984 that she staged what is considered by some the most amazing comeback in rock music history and achieved international super-stardom.

Having opened his own recording studio - Bolic Sound - following the lucrative success of Proud Mary, Ike produced Tina's first solo album, Tina Turns the Country On! in 1974. It failed to make an impact on the charts, as did the follow-up, Acid Queen (1975), released to tie in with Tina's critically acclaimed big-screen debut in the role of the same name in The Who's rock opera, Tommy.

Tina credits her newfound Buddhist faith with giving her the courage to eventually strike out on her own. By walking out on Ike in the middle of a tour, she learned she was legally responsible to tour promoters for the cancelled tour. Needing to earn a living, Tina decided to strike out on her own as a solo performer pulling a lounge act together and supplementing her income with TV appearances on shows like The Hollywood Squares, Donny and Marie, The Sonny & Cher Show and The Brady Bunch Hour.

Private Dancer peaked at number three on the US album sales chart and sold consistently throughout the year. It also remained at number-one for five weeks on the US R&B album sales chart. Private Dancer remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. Worldwide the album has been estimated having sold up to ten to eleven million copies, but also some sources estimating it sold over 20 million copies, thus making Private Dancer Turner's most successful solo album.

Tina's popularity throughout Europe had never faded during the tough times. She moved there permanently in 1986 to share a home with Erwin Bach, a German-born EMI record company executive 16 years her junior. In addition to a lakeshore home on the Goldküste (literally, "the Gold Coast"), the most exclusive district of Zurich, Switzerland, Turner has an estate in France at Villefranche-sur-Mer, a small town about four miles (six kilometers) east of the city of Nice. Her home there sits atop Mont Vinaigrier, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Tina entered the Guinness Book of World Records during her Break Every Rule tour when she performed in front of the largest paying audience ever to see a single performer. The audience was made up of over 184,000 fans at the Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The concert, sponsored by Pepsi, was broadcast live to a worldwide audience.

In 1988, Turner released "Tina Live In Europe" which brought her a fourth and final Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy Award. She shares the title for most, and most consecutive, Female Rock Vocal Grammy Awards with Pat Benatar.

She returned to the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with the film's theme song, "I Don't Wanna Fight" (which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal performance, Female) and embarked on a tour of North America and Australasia. Tina, What’s Love Live! was broadcast by FOX in the United States at the conclusion of her tour.

Turner retired from major tours after her most recent in 2000. However, she continues to make public appearances and collaborations. In 2001, Tennessee State Highway 19 between Brownsville and Nutbush was named "Tina Turner Highway". In 2003, she teamed up with Phil Collins to record the song "Great Spirits" for the Disney film Brother Bear.

Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock released an album, paying tribute to his longtime associate and friend, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, entitled River: The Joni Letters on September 25, 2007. Tina contributed her vocals to a version of "Edith and The Kingpin". On October 16th, 2007, guitar legend Santana released an album entitled Ultimate Santana, which features Tina singing The Game Of Love a song she recorded in 2002 but which had not been previously released.
