Lillian Gish was born under the birth name of Lillian de Guiche on October 14, 1893 in Springfield, Ohio or Northern Kentucky, depending on which source you believe. Her father was an alcoholic who caroused around, rarely at home, leaving the family to more or less to fend for themselves. To help make ends meet, Lillian, her sister Dorothy, and their mother tried their hand at acting in local productions.
Lillian was all of six years old when she first appeared in front of an audience. For th...
I never approved of talkies. Silent movies were well on their way to developing an entirely new art form. It was not just pantomine, but something wonderfully expressive.

"What a wonderful movie. I wish they would make it in a DVD. Fivetalented veterans of the silver (and I do mean 'silver') screenall together in a beautiful story of golden ages and golden memories. Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, Ann Sothern, Vincent Priceand Harry Carey Jr. are a joy to watch. I've watched this filmso many times I think I know all the lines, but I never tire of it. Five stars aren't enough to rate such stellar performances."
"I remember the tune from when i saw it as a kid in the late 60s, and have hoped to see it again ever since. What a breath of fresh air compared to the tripe that disney puts out today. Films like these remind us of america's golden age. Wonderful performances by all, uplifting singing on the trail, and a heart-rending, happy ending make this film a must have in the libraries of parents who want wholesome entertainment for their kids. I wonder why more of the 1960's disney movies have not come out on dvd. As a parent, i dont have to be woried about foul language ,sexual inuendos, or even 'attitudes' that my kids will see glorified when we watch films like these. I gave my copy to a newly-minted eagle scout, and will order another for my family..."
"Content of this film is better than any other Huck Finn version. Aside from just a few scenes, the film is really true to the original text novel. The only thing that is a pain is that the dvd has no chapter or scene separations. Showing it to high school classes is difficult due to the constant rewinding and fast forwarding to find where we left off."
"When I watched this as a young man of 20 I fell in love with it. It is not an action film. It is a beautiful story of deep characters as they find themselves having become old. It is a story of reclaiming yourself, even at the end of your days.It is one of the last films of Bette Davis and Vincent Price. They gave magnificent performances that I still treasure. I have waited a long time for this to come on DVD!! One of my favorite quotes is from Bette Davis. She was told by her sister that 'Memories fade with time.' Bette, portraying her blind sister, proudly proclaims in her best Bette Davisness - 'That has not been my experience!'"
