The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain
"Hugh Grant stars as the hapless surveyer who has the dubious fortune of determining if mountains truly are. When he discovers that a town's prized landmark falls a bit short, he's coerced by a local lovely into re-measuring. What he doesn't know is the whole town is going to build a mountain while he's otherwise occupied. This is a laugh a minute film and definitely one to be bought and kept for a day when you need cheering. "

"La Haine is my favorite film of all time. I agree with all the previous 5-star reviews. I am more than elated that Criterion is releasing it especially since I suggested it as a film they should release a couple of years ago. This film is a masterpiece."

The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain
"I just repaired a VCR at a friends house, and removed a broken cassette that had spilled this movie and wrapped it around the capstan. One of the couple is from a small village in Wales and was saddened that they might loose this film. The tale captures not only the beauty and heart of a portion of the country, but of the people as well. Though I found the film on an undamaged section of tape and could retore most of it, I'm buying them a new one instead."

Up the Down Staircase
"One of my favorite movies. As an innercity pubic high school student, I remember the snooty kids visiting us from an all-white suburban camelot academy mentioning that it reminded them of 'Up the Down Staircase'. The late Sandy Dennis' performance as idealistic English teacher Miss Barrett was one of the most undervalued and underrated, and I thought it criminal that she didn't rate at least an Oscar nomination. A wonderful supporting cast, including a pre-Edith Bunker Jean Stapleton and Eileen Heckert, and the students being played by real high school kids makes this special. I think you might be surprised how relatively mild these 'delinquents' act in comparison with the kids today. At least no kids were packing heat back then! Great this is coming to DVD."
