Racism in Eastern Europe "Message Dear Sir or Madam, I have just return from a trip around Eastern Europe, I visited Croatia , Montenegro , Albania and Greece I am a black women who has travelled extensively around the world since the age of 17. I often use a travel guide and feel that they have not really prepared me for the locals people reaction to me. I have always been a source of interest in places as far flung as Cambodia, India, all the states and China to name but a few. However these countries reacted in a way that was polite and it was out of curiosity, or on the part of India it was down to a lack of education. However in both Montenegro , Budva and Albania , Tirana , the capital, Berati and Saranda I was racially abused, people called me names and grabbed my hair. The most frightening thing for me was it was sometimes groups of 20 plus people at a time. However the worst experience for me was in a Hotel that we indirectly found via your book, we stayed at Republika Bd Zogu 1, Villa 66 in Tirana and they informed us that they had a hotel in Saranda. This was not in your book and rightly so. Nevertheless they are run by a family. The daughter's runs the hotel in Saranda and she was the worst racist she refused to give me breakfast even though it was bed and breakfast accomodation and when I asked for some more soap she gave me used soap covered in grit and dirt. I am aware that racism is a age old problem that will, unfortunately, never go away and I am also aware that the fascist parties are organising globally, particularly in Europe but we cannot ignore what I experienced. In fact I feel we should use my experience and ensure young black travellers are forewarned about what may occur. Travel books should have a section on black travellers, you highlight some of the plights faced by other discriminated groups ,Women ,Gays and Disabled travellers what about the young black traveller who wants to see the world and travel, they need to be prepared as well. Your sincerely, Linda Bradshaw BA (Hons)Sociology, PGCE and MSc Educational Management"
