"Mel Gibson's Maverick is somewhat goofy but charming, sly, and fairly humorous. A number of excellent cameos provide some comic relief, especially Danny Glover near the beginning of the movie. The biggest surprise for me was Jodie Foster, who, in an impressively rare comedic role, thankfully discards her repetoire of facial tics for a much more natural performance here. The plot is kept pretty simple until near the end -- and the end has a great twist, which I won't divulge. Suffice it to say that your time will be well spent. Recommended rental for sure, but also consider buying this excellent DVD because this comedy does well with repeat viewing."
"I love Jodie Foster and this movie fully showcases her acting ability. The picture quality is amazing, extremely detailed, and the sound is very deep. The ending could have been better, but I still very much enjoyed it (especially since I just got a Sony 1080p HDTV!!!) :)"
"First off this looks great in HD, that being said the movie ain't that bad either! It's a fun movie that at sometimes is slow but has a nice twist near the end that hasn't been done in any other movie I can think of, and come on it's Denzel!"
"I thought the Criterion release of SOTL was the definative DVD to get, but now the studio decides to issue this again with some new documentaries. So now i'll have to get this one too. I must have at least 2 dozen flix in my collection where i have 2, 3 or even 4 'editions' of a movie. My tolerence and my wallet is running out."
"Scorsese's dark vision of human alienation in an urban wasteland captures the seaminess of pre-Giuliani Manhattan, and DeNiro's career-making performance as Bickle is haunting, recalling those real-life outcasts who have used violent crime to tell an oblivious world: 'I was here!'. Stunningly directed and acted, this picture is every bit as disturbing now as when released. Brilliant, but not for the faint of heart."
