Was 'My Own Private Idaho' based on the life of Kurt Cobain?

"watch Kurt Cobain's Own Private Idaho on Youtube. Interesting little video comparing the lives of Kurt Cobain and the main character Mike in 'My Own Private Idaho. Character was originally written as a transient, blonde androgynous Seattle/Portland area teen, narcoleptic aspiring rock star, hustling as gay prostitute to feed a drug habit. This is exactly what Cobain was at one point prior to forming Nirvana. Gus Van Sant knew Cobain, so the film was likely based on Cobain's teen life."

"This lighthearted road film has a lot of heart and a lot of laughs. It's great to see J.P Pitoc and Christian Campbell reunited (and playing alongside Mark Hamill!). A great offering from first-time director Chuck Griffith and Roaring Leo Productions."

"Great movie that gave off a bit of a Kevin Smith vibe. The reviewer below, wh***viewed it poorly did not seem to understand the point of the movie, kurt Cobain is just a subplot. The movie gives a great view of 'Generation X' and is very funny as well with great acting from the entire cast. "

Kurt Cobain: The Early Life of a Legend

"This DVD was pretty interesting,but Id only recommend it to the hardcore fan who cant get enough.There is no Nirvana music or footage since its an unauthorized look at his life.Its full of interviews of people from Kurt's youth, such as Dale crover, schoolmates,Tracy 'About a girl' Marander, and Leland Cobain, his grandpa.Its the same old tale of divorce,drugs,alienation, and rock and roll.Pretty cool if youre interested in hearing obscure little facts, like Cobain getting high off of Edge shave gel.otherwise stay away."

Teen Spirit - A Tribute to Kurt Cobain

"It was not a good start...the first words were that 'this video contains no actual music by Nirvana'. It turns out to be a bunch of lame interviews with people who apparently were worth interviewing to someone involved in the making of this disappointing piece...why don't they release 'Live! Tonight! Sold Out!' on DVD??????? That's at least done by Kurt himself and has music/performances!"

Kurt and Courtney

"Kurt and Courtney is a well directed piece of film, owing much of it's greatness to Nick Broomfield. His editing techniques coupled with sinister musical overtones make the film worth watching. For actual content however, Kurt and Courtney lacks fabric. No Nirvana songs are used in a film which unashamedly points to Courtney Love as the reason for Kurt's death. Interviews with Hank Harrison and Dylan Carlson make for interesting viewing and a private investigator adds his two peneth worth. Overall, Kurt and Courtney struggles to draw many conclusions and is probably for die-hard fans only as there are some touching moments reliving Kurt's youth. That said, from the documentaries on offer on this subject, this is the best yet so take a look, I'd say it's worth it."

Kurt Cobain - Music Box Biographical Collection

"I have probably bought all the Kurt Cobain documentary/biographical DVD's available and this has got to be the poorest one I have bought so far. The quality is absolutely pathetic, it is very amateurish and what is most frustrating is the fact that the audio is not even in sync with the video. The content is also not very well researched and is not always factually correct. Not sure how crap like this make it onto amazon. Don't buy it, you will waste your money."
