"I'd give it 0 stars if that was an option. Universal thinks I should watch several 'previews' - (translation - advertisements) prior to watching my new DVD (that I paid for). The ads cannot be skipped, cannot be stopped, you can't hit 'menu' to get to the main menu. A complete joke, and an insulting slap in the face to everyone who BOUGHT the DVD instead of downloading it. I suggest you avoid this DVD. There is no point buying, it just encourages Universal to make more DVDs with more unskippable ads. The copy I bought will be returned to the place of purchase. If they won't give a refund, perhaps Universal will. If they refuse, maybe they'll see us in small claims court."
"The first time I saw Down Periscope wasn't at the theater, it was a video rental. As I watched the movie, I found myself wrapped up in the plot, the intellectual (as well as the not so intellectual) humor, and the way the cast seemed to meld together. Why did this movie not do well at the theaters? Was it not given the same level of advertising which Sargent Bilko received? I feel that Down Periscope was a better movie. But because Kelsey Grammer is not as big a name comedian as Steve Martin, Down Periscope was simply overlooked. I would love to have this movie on DVD."
"I was really disappointed with this entry even though Jason Takes Manhattan isn't much better! The DVD treatment is way to good for this film. If you want to complete the Friday series it should be seen as it does set up for the Freddy VS Jason movie. "
"I am going to return this dvd, and any other dvd that i purchase in the future that makes me watch 5 minutes of previews before allowing me to get to a menu everytime i insert the disk. Further, although i'm not 100% sure, i think there have been changes made to the soundtrack, in that some of the original songs have been removed and replaced with others. More insult.recommend you stay away."
"...Anyone who has done the least bit of research will know that David Lynch has final cut of everything he does. He chose to cut the movie down from its original inception. Please know that this is a fantastic movie, and the DVD IS Lynch-approved. As for the commentary and deleted scenes, Lynch has stated many times that he will NEVER do commentary, and does not agree whole-heartedly with including deleted scenes. He also refuses to use chapter stops (this is good). If you need someone to hold your hand while you watch this movie, and explain how to think for yourself, then I propose you find a different film to watch."
"Finally got my DVD copy of Down Periscope...my favorite movie starring Kelsey Grammer. I opened it immediately and put it in my DVD player, saying to myself, NOW I will see the whole movie in WIDESCREEN!!Nope. They did not put out the orignal print. This is the pan-and-scan version with the top and bottom of the screen chopped off. Its very apparent in several parts of the movie. I ran my VHS on one TV and the DVD on the home theater...its the same width of screen.I was also not impressed with the 5.1 surround. Not nearly enough seperation and use of the back speakers, or subwoofer!! Buckman's fart should have come booming out of my subfoofer...Nada.At least the colors and quality of print on the pan-and-scan side are better than my VHS copy. Movie is great. DVD is not."
