"Watching these movies brings me back to my early teenage years when Walter Farley's books were the ultimate for a horse crazy girl. Maybe they are not as sophisticated or technologically advanced as newer horse flicks, but they are special in their own right. Four different horses were used for this film, this explaining slight differences in appearance. In accordance to breed standards, an Arabian horse is the only horse that can be purely black, as the members of this breed have predominantly black skin, whereas other breeds have pink. A true black Arabian horse will not 'bleach out' as a bay will. Anyhow, great movies for any horse lover."
"I too first saw this film in the early 80's on HBO. I was in junior high school at the time--the same age as the teenagers depicted in the movie. Hence, I could relate to many of its themes (i.e. bell bottoms, freaks, skateboards and teen parties). This film is a very accurate portrayal of troubled suburban teens and the problems that arise when they are ignored by adults. Matt Dillon gives an awesome performance in what I believe is one of his first major roles. In addition, on a nostalgic note, the soundtrack to this film includes classic 70's songs from Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Ramones and the Cars. These songs certainly capture the essence of the time (the late 70's). Eventually, I hope this movie gets released on DVD. It's a classic in my opinion."
"Not too bad.... Was entertaining - but some of the subplots were just a tad too improbable for me. I think there should have been more focus on the public's panic. "
"Four years after the first film, l983 would usher in this sequel to the The Black Stallion, and Kelly Reno would once again be the one wh***scues the Arabian stallion from other thrilling captivities. There are more horses, exotic locations, and thrilling plots here than meets the eye, and the story gets so much better. But of course, it is 'Cass-ole' who steals the show - the beautiful black Arabian stallion.A might fine sequel to a great original film. Highly recommended!!!"
"I have read every book that Walter and his son have written about the Black. The books always captured a child's point of view about horses. The dream of sailing off into the wind on the back of a really fast steed. I think Coppola captured that feeling in both of these movies. I like the quietness of the first one. The book was written to make you feel rather than listen to dialogue. There was little dialogue to begin with. Slightly off the subject, I think Walter had a passion about Seabisquit and had him in mind when he created the Black. Kelly Reno was superb. A total natural around horses. Cass- ole was stunning, even in makeup. Oh, if the horse looks brown in the sunlight, remember this, no animal is truly black. They're all just a really dark shade of brown."
