"Late August, Early September is a gem. If you like Rohmer, but need more 'character complexity', this film will satisfy your need for intellectual stimulation, poignancy, and reality. This film is to cinema what Kundera is to literature."
"Genuinely funny all the way through. I DON'T watch films described as 'hilarious', 'zany' as I always find them, in my opinon, stupid. I like real people and real situations. This movie is genuinely funny and the characters are true to themselves. This movie has warm humor. Don't miss it."
"Some will say french melodramas are too understated and long winded but i found myself thoroughly enjoying this character-driven gem. Editing is reminescent of Godard with its jump-cut scene transitions and non-static camera movements. If you like slow character-evolving films without the overt freudian-analysis and preaching, go check out the film at a rental before purchasing."
"Besides for a great scenic beach, the movie just dragged on. It appeared as if the script wasn't finished and it was being improvised by the actors. I really wanted to see this movie since seeing the movie trailers, but was totally disappointed once I saw it. Titanic was a better movie to see Leonardo at his best. Hopefully he'll appear in something more interesting and challenging to his talent. If you want to see this movie, wait until it's 99 cent rental at your local video store."
"Cinematically this movie is quite beautiful, albeit a bit contrived. No good has ever come from a room full of murky bathtubs. The plot is equally murky, almost nonexistent. Whispering children, an empty hospital, vague statements, et al. Why are there two women and a crazy girl cleaning an abandoned hospital anyway? Who cares. If the film were in Japanese Hollywood would probably call it brilliant and remake 'Saint Ange.' But unfortunately the film is in English so we realize how bad it truly is. Save your money and your time. Skip this dreadfully boring film."
"First off, I absolutely loved the novel. Amazingly fresh and intelligent. The movie -- cut a main character out, put in ridiculous and unneeded sex scenes, and basically destroyed all the major conflict of the novel. As a movie, it was pretty, little else. As a movie based on a book -- whoa what book did the screenwriter read? Not one scene was the same in both book/film and the movie makes little sense of certain subplots. Read the book -- watch The Beach on cable"
