"This is not a 'film' this is a movie. It is designed to entertain us for a little while and that is exactly what it does. Sure the acting and writing didn't get any recognition at the award shows, but so what! This movie is about adventure, humor and special affects, which is has plenty of. So people please dont take this so seriously, the actors and directors didnt why should you?"
"Encino Man will never be called a classic. There is too much sophomoric humor, too close a tracking of the standard 'underdog eventually wins' formula, and some poor acting in the supporting roles.
But it WAS a light and entertaining flick. I suspect it really is best suited for the 12-22 age group, particularly males. I mean, it is of the 'boy loser is well intentioned but really needs assistance to steal the girl from the top jock' genre.
Don't overlook 'In The Army Now' for a more engaging comedy and a better demonstration of Pauly Shore's talents."
"This film might have seemed 'strained and obvious' to some of the other reviewers here, but if you are Jewish and grew up in the 1950's, you'll relate to it very well. Especially the part about having to violate the Jewish holidays in order to play on the team -- a conflict that still arises for Jewish students today. I've used this film very successfully in high school discussions and in classes on antisemitism. And yes, things like this really did happen to Jews -- and still do. The question of whether or not to stay 'in the closet' and 'pass' or be yourself and get rejected is an issue for other minorities, too. If you work in any area of multicultural studies and/or dialogue, you should add this film to your library."
"Like 'The Mummy' in HD-DVD, the added depth of color and resolution make this HD-DVD one to own -- and one to show off assuming your HDTV is up to it. The contrasts and colors are spectacular and there is detail everywhere.
Not to mention it's just a fun story -- well told, well acted, well directed and certainly made with more than enough production money. And Brendan Fraser/Rachel Weisz are just so cute."
"This movie made me think how far Hollywood has to go to appear to have some substance and be intouch with reality. This contrived social flick is supposed to get people talking about race and social conflict. Forget it. I thought the whole conflct-race-religion delimma, as superficial as it was, failed to deliver anything worth the price of the DVD. Superficial, silly, and predictable. I will give it a one star as I could clean my office and go through my files and not miss a beat in the movie.
Sorry, I just did not find this movie worthy of my time, let alone an award. However, my office is cleaner."
"Please be aware that Columbia recently 'revised' this DVD. The prior DVD had both widescreen and pan & scan on the disc. This new version has only pan & scan. How's that for progress! Thanks Columbia!Amazon's technical details still show widescreen, which they had told me they would correct after shipping me two copies to try and get me the widescreen version they were supposedly selling. It's a great thing that Amazon is understanding about these things."
