"This is a movie which I taped each time it was on TV until I got the very best print I could. I watched it religiously 2 or 3 times a year. Always in awe. The music, the acting, the production are all breath-takingly spectacular. This movie is unforgettable, one of those films that one's own memory (to say nothing of musicals made for the next 25 years) quotes from incessantly. Fabulous to have it on DVD!"
"As the young generation of today only swell over 'Titanic' and 'Jurrasic Park' at the cinema, movie musicals have long being forgotten and discarded. I live in Singapore where it is hard to find somebody who still remembers about the famous movie musicals made by MGM( or other studios). However, this collective clips of musicals made by MGM really offer me a deep insight into what was once popular and successful in HOllywood. I love all the scenes and all those dancing movements. It's a pity I have missed out on so many great musicals before my time. My advice: Forget about disaster stories or computer aided graphics for the time being and treat yourself to a world of fascinating songs and dance! YOu'll love it. Musicals are for everyone to enjoy certainly."
"This wonderful DVD features songs written by the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerome Kern & Dorothy Fields just to name a few composers and lyricists. A big plus is that the entire musical numbers are shown, but not just short clips. If you love great American songs, this DVD is for you. Highly recommended."
"My ohmy.... Well we all know that MGM released over 200 musical films - almost all better than any produced by other studios(well, I agree - it was an overstatement). But in the 70`s, long after the original musicals lost the general interest, MGM released two compilation films of their rich musical past. And they did it with the same inventiveness that made the ol`ones so special. What a treat to watch..."
"Once again, Gene, Fred, and many others remind us that great talent and art are timeless. The MGM musicals and many of their stars will be an essential part of cinematic history forever, and TE III provides a wonderful way to enjoy and remember this dazzling era."
"'San Francisco' (1936) contains a memorable Clark Gable performance and some of the best special effects from MGM's golden age. The depiction of the 1906 earthquake and its aftermath remain cinematic highlights. Unfortunately, the lavish melodrama is saddled with glaring flaws: excessive singing and limited acting by Jeanette MacDonald; a romantic storyline worthy of Popeye, Bluto and Olive Oyl; the great Spencer Tracy relegated to a thankless supporting role; and the tacked-on 'morally uplifting' conclusion. Even though the MGM gloss mars a potentially great film, it's still worth seeing."
