"Harry Belafonte acts like a cheeseball sometimes, but this video has some great information for fans of latin music. It tells the story of the music, beginning in Africa and Spain, and going to Cuba and the US. Awesome music throughout, very informative movie. My only complaint is that Harry Belafonte is a dork. I have no problem with him, I just think he's a dork."
"With a 2 year old, coming up with a video that will settle her down for more than 5 minutes is a challenge. This is the only video that she will watch beginning to end, and she loves the songs! She likes dancing to the music, especially Gloria Estefan. The Shawn Colvin, Jimmy Buffet and Kenny Loggins pieces really calm her down. She also laughs a lot at the misshaps during the Rosie O'Donnel part. I highly recommend it for parents (both for your kinds and you)..."
"This is one of my all time favorites, and Harry Belafonte is the perfect host. He's delightfully informal and shares personal insights along the way, such as how his contract was cancelled by the mob who ran the Copacabana because he'd married interracially.
One of the aspects I particularly enjoyed was the look at everyday life in Cuba, and the discussion of the U.S. role in that country's history. Without hammering away at the fact, Belafonte discusses our government's unwillingness to recognize Cuba's sovereignty, and expresses his hope that music will break down the barriers. But politics aside, this video series is a must-see for any student of African American music, and Spanish American heritage."
"This video is just horrible! I bought it because my 18 month old loves Elmo. Elmo is barely in the video! After 2 minutes, my toddler walked out of the room. It most definitely did not hold any interest for her."
"I have been her fan since 1988 and her music changes but her sincerity in singing her songs never seems to fade. This musical episode has been one of my favorite, been watching her dvd almost everyday.Gloria's maturity shows coz she sang her songs with more passion and guts(its not she has never been good even though she was recovering from flu that disrupted her voice for the show!)For her fans she full-heartedly performed and gains never-ending standing ovation.Miami Sound Machine was ever voted the best band in the world!Their sound is crystal but the D/DGTL has compressed much of the sound produced and the live ambience supressed to its minimum level.Overall the songs were well knitted with surprises....a musical journey not to be missed!"
"This 3 video collection is a must have for all interested in Latin music history from Africa to Cuba to New York. Has some amazing music clips of Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, etc."
