"Since historical facts concerning Henry Purcell are skimpy, the writers and producers of this Monty Python account of his life decided to fill in the details with actors in period dress hamming it up through various time periods, including the presenti** a pity, because we really do need a serious documentary on Purcell -- and this certainly doesn't fill the bill. (Incidentally, the accent seems to be shifting around again from Purcell' to Pur'cell, to Purcell'. Which is it?)
The two stars I have given the effort are solely for John Eliot Gardiner's always splendid (but here, chopped up and scattered) musical contribution -- which, after reading the initial florid review, is the only reason I finally bought the dvd. Buyer beware!"
"First of all, for those who are wondering why Amazon has this listed as being in color, they're NOT in color. Universal Studios has descriptions of these DVDs on their website, and they have described them as being in black and white - which is great news. Just do a search on their website and you'll see it.
Anyhow, this is a great collection for fans of old Universal Monster films. Obviously, 'The Mummy' with Boris Karloff is the best of the bunch. But the other four films on this DVD are great fun too. They don't have the same mummy in them as the first Mummy film did, but they're great classic horror and that's what counts. I can't wait to have this collection!"
"This movie was a delight to watch. It's simple presentation of tradition and the power it holds trying to bond with the here and now. It shows that you can hold on to your beliefs and values and still find happiness. Beautifully acted.............camera work wonderful.......director did a great job."
"Just to see Rowan A's facial expressions change from a bumbling insincere 'oaf' to the smooth and deboniare 'James Bond' Johnny English is to appreciate a master at work. It certainly is an art ......
Not since Peter Sellers' Pink Panther days has anyone been able to take his place and really make the audience outright laugh rather than just groan at cheap Saturday Night Live type dumb dumb humour ...
Loved this movie and it's worth every penny .... "
"This movie always puts a smile on my face. It may not be the most complex storyline, or have amazing special effects. But this movie is still special. This is my 'Having a Bad Day' movie. I put it on, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Even with the opening song, it's just a fun, kick-back and enjoy-the-show movie. Gwyneth Paltrow is my favorite contemporary actress, and she does a superb job in this film. Her English accent is wonderful and fun to listen to, and the comic timing of Gwyneth and John Hannah are amazing, as well as the rest of the cast. This is the movie to watch if you're feeling down and need a fun pick-me-up. It takes your mind of of things, and for a good 2 hours, you just enjoy!"
"The Mummy legacy is a mixed bag. It has the original Karloff classic and some very inferior quasi-sequels. The amount of effort and creativity Jack Pierce used to create the Mummy make up which is only seen for a few seconds is amazing! The best looking Mummy ever! as all of Master Pierce's creations! Even though the other four Mummy movies can be reviewed as silly,I still love them all!"
